Master the Essentials of Your EHR
Core Aspects
It’s important to understand the core aspects of any sophisticated computer application and learn shortcuts to quicken processes. For instance, in the current version of Cerner, there’s a Provider View designed to be the home page where you can get everything done.
The page has three panes: the left side for the navigation menu, the middle for all the data, and the third for documentation. The middle pane includes documents, allergies, histories, labs, imaging studies, pathology reports, and charges. You can create the third pane by clicking on the move button for the text boxes with the history of the present illness, review of systems, physical exam, etc. This way, you can navigate to where you want by the left and middle panes and write what you need in the right pane, all on a single screen.
Essentials
It’s essential to know how to write notes, place orders, and send scripts, get authorized to prescribe controlled substances, send messages to other providers, communicate electronically with your staff, and place charges. Sometimes, you may need to use a third-party link or app, and the informatics team should set you up. These are core functionalities in the EHR, and you need to focus during the orientation sessions to ensure you get them right.
Your Voice
The EHR may need to be set up better when you start using it. Those teaching you how to use it may not provide the most efficient ways upfront. Sometimes, the Helpdesk resolution for your concerns may need to be revised. Please don’t take their advice for granted and continue to investigate and improve your workflow independently. Continue to voice your concerns, for this is how systems improve.
In the upcoming post, I will discuss practical aspects of managing your workflow and offer some tips and tricks for making your life easier.
